Frequently asked questions about marble and granite.

What is Granite?

Granite is an igneous rock created deep within the earth from magma, cooled slowly under great pressure. It is the hardest known building stone with very dense grain, making it virtually impervious to stain. It takes a highly polished finish, which will endure even in inclement environments. It can also be finished in a variety of other ways.

There is a broad spectrum of granite coloration, ranging from nearly pure white to nearly pure black. During its formation, granite may also have been infused with other minerals providing patterned "movement" as well as color. On the Measurement Of Hardness Scale (MOHS), granite ranges from 6-8, making it one of the hardest building materials known to mankind. The hardest known material, diamond, is rated 10.

What is Marble?

Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of metamorphosed limestone. In its purest form, marble is crystalline white calcite. Most marbles, however, are infused with impurities such a dolomite, silica or clay, providing variations in color and significant "movement."

The base colors of marble range from white to black, with a broad range of hues, marble is significantly softer than granite and therefore subject to greater wear and weathering. Marble ranges from 2-5 on the MOHS.

What is Quartz?

Quartz is a man made engineered stone. Comprised of 93% natural quartz it is one of the most durable and maintenance free products available. We have a full display of Quartz in our showroom along with samples to check out.

What stone's best for my Kitchen? Bathroom?

Granite is a dense stone and therefore more scratch and stain resistant. It is better suited for a kitchen and areas where food is prepared. Marble is a softer stone and has more pores, it is recommended in bathrooms and areas with less wear and tear. Quartz can be used in any indoor application.

What is the thickness of stone? Which option should I choose?

Natural stone and most Quartz comes in two standard thicknesses for countertop applications: 2cm (3/4") and 3cm (1 1/4"). Each thickness has its own advantages and disadvantages. Come visit our showroom to see both options displayed and go over the differences.

Will I have seams?

Stone slabs average about 65"-74" Tall and 110"-120" in length. When countertops run longer than the slab you select, there will be a seam. Seaming is an art. Please ask to see samples of our seams when you visit our showroom. Seam location is determined when we template your kitchen however feel free to ask about possible seam locations and let us know what you would prefer.

Will any fabrication be done in my house?

We fabricate everything in our state of the art shop. Typically, only the drilling for plumbing, and possibly the sink or stove cutout, is done onsite. We recommend you drape off all rooms outside of the work site to keep them dust free.

Can you give me a quote over the phone?

Unfortunately, no. There are so many different factors that go into determining the estimate, it's impossible to do it without considering the exact specifics of your project. The price varies depending on the style you select.

Material costs can range from $7 to $120 per square foot. However, the most widely used styles cost between $15 and $20 per square foot. The fabrication & installation costs are then added to your material selection to get your final price. The average installed cost for new kitchen countertops ranges from $3,500-$5,500.
