Maintaining Your Stone Countertop

Keep your stone surfaces clean with mild dish soap or a product formulated for natural stone. Never use petroleum based cleaners, waxes, or products containing vinegar or ammonia. Never use abrasive cleaners like Comet or Ajax. Always wipe up grease spatters and acidic substances (fruit juices, wine, coffee, hairspray, toothpaste, etc.) in a timely manner to avoid absorption. Windex spray cleaner may be used to clean natural stone, but can cause your sealer to evaporate more quickly.

Seal your stone surfaces periodically. We seal all of our stone projects with a high-quality impregnating sealer before installation. However, in order to keep our fabrication and installation schedules, it is often necessary to seal stone while it is still a bit damp. This does not affect the quality of the sealing, but it does shorten the time before the stone should be re-sealed. A bottle of Stone Tech? Revitalizer will be given to you when the installation of your stone is completed. We do recommend that within a month of installation, you use the Revitalizer to clean and seal your counters thoroughly (please follow the directions provided). From this point on, we recommend you use the Revitalizer on your stone counters at least once a year to help protect your stone for years to come. Revitalizer is a cleaner with a small amount of sealer added. It has been specially formulated to prolong the life of the sealer that was used originally on your counters.

Some stones, especially lighter-colored stones, may require more applications of Revitalizer or sealer in order to meet customer satisfaction. Sealing products are available in our showroom in Hillsboro.

Avoid hot grease and oil splatters altogether. The customer is advised to be especially careful to protect against hot grease spatters and spills around the range area. The combination of oil and heat can increase the possibility of breaking down the sealer and can leave the stone with a darkened, oily spot. Should such an incident occur, most oil spots can be removed by applying a poultice or by darkening the entire surface to blend the spot with the rest of the countertop. A stone-care professional should be contacted to perform this work.

Do not use your stone as a cutting board. Granite is extremely dense, hard and very difficult to scratch. However, a sharp knife may spar the surface leaving it fractured and susceptible to later chipping or cracking. We recommend using a cutting board for your cutting surface.
